ion-exchange

Reversible particle substitution

Ion-exchange is a chemical process in which ions in a solution are swapped for ions of a similar charge bound to a solid material, typically a resin.

This technique is widely used in water purification, where hard water passes through a resin that exchanges calcium and magnesium ions for sodium ions, producing softer water.

Ion-exchange also has applications in chemical analysis, metal recovery, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The water softener uses ion-exchange to remove minerals.
