inert gas

Chemically aloof substance

An inert gas is one that doesn't readily react with other elements or compounds under normal conditions.

The term typically refers to the noble gases—helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon—which have stable electron configurations that make them chemically unreactive.

Inert gases are used in welding, lighting, and other applications where chemical stability matters: The tank was filled with inert gas to prevent oxidation.
