impeach
Charge with misconduct
Impeach is a verb meaning to formally charge a public official with misconduct while in office.
In the United States, the House of Representatives may impeach a president, which initiates a trial in the Senate; impeachment itself does not remove someone from office but is rather the accusation that precedes a trial.
More broadly, to impeach something is to call it into question or challenge its validity: The defense attorney impeached the witness's credibility.
The related noun is impeachment.
