impeaching

Bringing official charges

Impeaching is charging a public official with misconduct in office.

In the United States, the House of Representatives impeaches; the Senate then holds a trial that may result in removal.

The word extends to questioning credibility: The defense attorney succeeded in impeaching the witness.

To impeach testimony or evidence is to challenge its validity.
