disqualify

Bar from competing

To disqualify is to declare someone ineligible or unfit for something—a competition, a position, a benefit.

A runner may be disqualified for a false start, a candidate disqualified by lack of credentials.

The word often implies that requirements existed and weren't met: His criminal record disqualified him from serving on the jury.

To disqualify yourself is to remove yourself from consideration, often due to conflict of interest.
