hostler

Inn's stable worker

A hostler is someone who takes care of horses, especially at an inn or stable where travelers stop.

The word dates from when inns provided lodging for horses alongside their riders.

In American railroad usage, a hostler moves locomotives around a yard or services them between runs—the same idea of tending vehicles at rest.

Also spelled ostler.
