feedbag

Horse's portable trough

A feedbag is a bag filled with grain or other feed, strapped over a horse's muzzle so it can eat while standing.

The phrase put on the feedbag means to eat a meal, usually a substantial one—the image being of settling in to eat like a working animal: Let's put on the feedbag before we hit the road.
