rail conductor

Train ticket collector

A rail conductor is the crew member in charge of a train's operation apart from driving it.

The conductor collects tickets, announces stops, assists passengers, and coordinates with the engineer.

On freight trains, conductors manage switching operations and paperwork.

The role differs from the engineer or driver, who operates the locomotive: The conductor punched my ticket and told me we'd arrive in twenty minutes.
