haying

Harvesting dried grass

Haying is the work of cutting, drying, and storing hay—grass or other plants harvested as animal feed.

The term covers the whole seasonal process: mowing fields, letting the cut grass dry, raking it into rows, and baling or stacking it for storage.

We spent all of August haying.

Haying season typically falls in late summer when weather permits proper drying.
