haylage

Wilted grass storage

Haylage is grass or other forage that has been partially dried and then stored in airtight conditions to ferment.

It sits between hay and silage in moisture content—wetter than hay, drier than silage.

The fermentation preserves nutrients while reducing dust, making it popular for feeding horses with respiratory sensitivities: We switched to haylage after the mare developed heaves.
