collective farming
Pooled land cultivation
Collective farming is an agricultural system in which land is pooled and worked jointly, typically under state direction rather than private ownership.
The term evokes Soviet-era kolkhozes and similar arrangements in communist countries, where individual farms were consolidated into large cooperative units.
The results were often inefficient and sometimes catastrophic: Collective farming policies contributed to widespread famine.
