hard return

Forced line break

A hard return is a line break explicitly inserted by pressing Enter or Return, as opposed to a soft return where text automatically wraps to the next line.

Hard returns create permanent breaks that remain even if the text is reformatted or the margins change: Remove the hard returns before pasting into the layout program.

The distinction matters in word processing and coding, where hard returns can cause formatting problems if used where soft wraps were intended.
