habitants
Canadian French settlers
Habitants were French settlers in colonial Canada, particularly those farming along the St.
Lawrence River in Quebec.
The term distinguished ordinary farming folk from the seigneurs who owned the land.
In Canadian French, the word retains its original sense of inhabitants or residents, while in English it specifically evokes this colonial agricultural class.
