gyrocopters

Unpowered rotor planes

Gyrocopters are small aircraft that use an unpowered rotor for lift and a conventional propeller for forward thrust.

Unlike helicopters, whose rotors are engine-driven, a gyrocopter's rotor spins freely, turned by air flowing up through it as the craft moves forward.

Also called autogyros or gyroplanes.
