Boeing 747

Iconic wide-body aircraft

The Boeing 747 is a large, wide-body commercial aircraft introduced in 1970, recognizable by its distinctive hump-shaped upper deck.

Often called the jumbo jet, it was the first wide-body airplane and revolutionized long-haul air travel by dramatically increasing passenger capacity.

The 747 made transcontinental flights affordable for ordinary travelers.

Though passenger versions are being phased out in favor of more fuel-efficient twin-engine planes, the 747 remains in service as a cargo freighter.
