guy-wires

Tent pole supports

Guy-wires are cables or ropes anchored to the ground to stabilize a tall structure—a radio tower, tent pole, or mast.

They radiate outward from the structure at angles, transferring lateral forces to the ground: The tent collapsed when a guy-wire came loose.

Also spelled as one word or two: guywire, guy wire.
