great-uncle

Parent's parent's brother

A great-uncle is the brother of one's grandparent—one generation above an uncle.

The term follows the pattern of great-grandparent, with "great" marking each additional generation back: My great-uncle fought in World War II.

Also spelled granduncle, though this form is less common.
