grandfather
Parent's male parent
A grandfather is your parent's father.
The word extends to any male ancestor further back: My grandfather immigrated from Poland; his grandfather fought in the Napoleonic Wars.
Grandfather also works as a verb meaning to exempt from new rules based on prior status: Existing tenants were grandfathered in under the old rent policy.
A grandfather clock is a tall freestanding pendulum clock.
