guaranty

Formal financial pledge

Guaranty is a formal promise to answer for another's debt or obligation if they fail to pay.

It functions much like guarantee but appears mainly in legal and financial contexts: The bank required a personal guaranty from the business owner.

The verb means to provide such assurance.

Outside legal documents, guarantee is the more common spelling for both noun and verb.
