graving

Cutting into surface

Graving is the act of carving or engraving, particularly cutting into a hard surface.

A graving dock is a dry dock where ships are cleaned and repaired—the hull is "graved" by scraping off barnacles and marine growth, then coated with protective material.

The word is largely archaic outside nautical contexts: The shipyard's graving dock could accommodate vessels up to 800 feet.
