graving dock
Vessel repair basin
A graving dock is a narrow basin where ships are brought for cleaning, painting, or repair of their hulls.
The dock can be sealed off and drained, allowing workers to access the entire underside of the vessel.
The name comes from the older sense of grave meaning to clean a ship's bottom.
The freighter entered the graving dock for scheduled maintenance.
