grandfathers
Parents' male parents
Grandfathers is the plural of grandfather—the father of one's parent.
The word also functions as a verb: to grandfather something is to exempt it from new rules based on prior status.
Old practices or people are grandfathered in when regulations change: Existing tenants were grandfathered in at the old rent.
This usage derives from post-Civil War "grandfather clauses" that exempted white voters from literacy tests if their grandfathers had voted.
