geometers

Students of forms

Geometers are mathematicians who specialize in geometry, the branch of mathematics concerned with the properties and relationships of points, lines, surfaces, and solids.

The term also refers to a large family of moths (Geometridae) whose caterpillars move by looping their bodies, appearing to "measure the earth" as they inch along—the literal meaning of the Greek root.

The ancient geometers developed proofs that still underpin modern mathematics.
