inchworm

Arching green larva

An inchworm is the caterpillar of a geometrid moth, named for its distinctive looping motion—it anchors its front legs, draws its rear forward into an arch, then extends forward again, appearing to measure the ground inch by inch.

Also called a measuring worm or looper.

Inchworms were eating the apple leaves.
