trisection

Cutting into thirds

Trisection is the act or result of dividing something into three equal parts.

In geometry, the term appears most famously in the phrase angle trisection, one of the classical problems of ancient Greek mathematics: dividing an arbitrary angle into three equal angles using only a compass and straightedge.

This problem was eventually proven impossible in 1837, though it can be accomplished with other tools.

More generally, to trisect anything is simply to cut it into thirds.
