gender studies
Masculinity-femininity academic field
Gender studies is an academic field examining how gender shapes identity, social structures, and power relations.
It emerged from women's studies in the late twentieth century, expanding to include masculinity, sexuality, and nonbinary identities.
The field draws on sociology, history, psychology, and literary theory: She's majoring in gender studies.
Critics sometimes use the term dismissively to characterize impractical academic pursuits.
