gendering

Sorting by sex

Gendering is the process of assigning or attributing gender to something—a person, role, object, or concept.

Languages with grammatical gender require gendering nouns: In Spanish, "table" is feminine.

Social gendering assigns masculine or feminine associations to things like colors, occupations, or behaviors: The gendering of nursing as women's work.

To gender someone is to identify or address them as a particular gender: The ultrasound technician gendered the baby before the parents were ready to know.
