fusee
Red safety flare
A fusee is a cone-shaped pulley in clockwork mechanisms, designed to equalize the force of an unwinding spring—as the spring loses tension, the cord moves to the wider part of the cone, compensating for the loss.
Fusee also names a colored flare used as a warning signal on railways or roads, and historically, a friction match with a large head that stays lit in wind.
