distress flare
Rescue light shot
A distress flare is a pyrotechnic device that produces bright light or colored smoke to signal an emergency, typically at sea or in remote areas.
Flares may be handheld, fired from a pistol, or launched as rockets.
Maritime vessels and aircraft are often required to carry them: The captain fired a distress flare when the engine failed.
