fire steel

Primitive ignition tool

Fire steel is a piece of high-carbon steel struck against flint or similar hard stone to produce sparks for starting fires.

The technique predates matches and lighters by centuries.

Modern fire steels, also called ferrocerium rods or ferro rods, use a synthetic alloy that throws hotter sparks: He scraped his knife down the fire steel until the tinder caught.
