flare gun
Emergency light pistol
A flare gun is a handheld device that fires bright burning projectiles into the sky, used primarily as a distress signal.
Boaters, hikers, and pilots carry them for emergencies: The captain fired a flare gun when the engine failed.
Flare guns also see use in crowd control and military signaling.
