Christmas Island
Australian territory, Pacific
Christmas Island is an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean, known for its annual red crab migration and as the site of an immigration detention center.
A separate Christmas Island in the Pacific, part of Kiribati, is also called Kiritimati.
Both were named for being encountered on Christmas Day by European explorers.
