man-o-war

Warship with sails

A man-o-war is a warship, especially a large sailing vessel of the 16th through 19th centuries armed with cannons and designed for naval combat.

The term now sounds archaic or poetic.

The Portuguese man-o-war is a marine organism resembling a jellyfish, with long venomous tentacles trailing from a gas-filled bladder that floats on the surface.

Also spelled man-of-war.
