livre
Parisian reading material
Livre is a former French monetary unit, replaced by the franc after the Revolution.
The word means "pound" in French, and like the British pound, it originated as a unit of weight in precious metal.
Today livre appears mainly in historical contexts: a debt of five hundred livres.
In modern French, livre simply means book.
