ecu
Old Gallic currency
An ecu was a French gold or silver coin used from the 13th through 18th centuries, its name derived from the shield (écu) depicted on it.
The term appears occasionally in historical fiction and translations of French literature: He paid twenty ecus for the horse. (Capitalized ECU is an acronym.)
