CFA franc

West African currency

The CFA franc is a currency used in fourteen African countries, most of them former French colonies.

Two distinct versions exist—one for West Africa, one for Central Africa—each backed by the French treasury and pegged to the euro.

The arrangement provides monetary stability but critics argue it perpetuates economic dependence on France.
