pump jacks
Oilfield beam rockers
Pump jacks are the distinctive beam-shaped machines that extract oil from underground wells, recognizable by their rocking horse motion as they rise and fall.
The mechanism uses a counterweighted beam to drive a piston that draws crude oil to the surface.
Also called nodding donkeys or horsehead pumps, they dot oil fields across Texas, Oklahoma, and other petroleum-producing regions: We passed hundreds of pump jacks on the drive through West Texas.
