induced seismicity
Human-caused earthquakes
Induced seismicity refers to earthquakes triggered by human activity rather than natural tectonic forces.
Common causes include wastewater injection from oil and gas operations, hydraulic fracturing (fracking), reservoir impoundment behind large dams, and mining.
These earthquakes are typically small but can occasionally cause damage: Oklahoma's dramatic increase in earthquakes has been linked to induced seismicity from wastewater disposal.
