crannog

Artificial island home

A crannog is an ancient dwelling built on an artificial island in a lake or marsh, typically constructed from timber, stone, and brush.

Found mainly in Scotland and Ireland, crannogs date from the Bronze Age through medieval times.

The isolation provided defense: Archaeologists discovered a well-preserved crannog in Loch Tay.
