flying saucer
Disc from space
A flying saucer is a disc-shaped unidentified flying object, the classic image of an alien spacecraft.
The term emerged in the late 1940s from early UFO sightings and became central to science fiction and extraterrestrial lore: He claimed to have seen a flying saucer hovering over the field.
The shape—a flattened disc or two plates pressed together—defines the term even when no aliens are implied.
