flashings

Metal weather barriers

Flashings are thin pieces of sheet metal or other material used in construction to prevent water from entering joints or seams—where a roof meets a wall, around chimneys, skylights, or windows.

The material directs water away from vulnerable points: The roofer replaced the flashings around the chimney.

Without proper flashings, leaks develop.
