flame wars
Heated internet arguments
Flame wars are prolonged exchanges of hostile messages in online forums, comment sections, or social media.
What begins as disagreement escalates into personal attacks, insults, and increasingly heated rhetoric.
The term dates to early internet culture, when bulletin boards and Usenet groups were prone to such conflagrations: The thread about pineapple on pizza devolved into a flame war.
