bad faith

Insincere dealing, philosophically

Bad faith is dishonesty or insincerity in dealing with others—acting with hidden motives or pretending to cooperate while actually undermining.

In contract law, bad faith means violating the implied duty to deal fairly: The insurer denied the claim in bad faith.

In philosophy, particularly existentialism, bad faith is self-deception about one's freedom and responsibility—pretending you have no choice when you do.
