natural logarithm

Base-e inverse function

The natural logarithm is a logarithm with the mathematical constant *e* (approximately 2.718) as its base.

It answers the question: to what power must *e* be raised to produce a given number?

Written as ln or logₑ, it appears throughout mathematics, physics, and engineering because *e* emerges naturally in processes involving continuous growth or decay: the natural logarithm of 1 is 0, the natural logarithm of e is 1.
