mantissa
Logarithm's decimal portion
The mantissa is the fractional part of a logarithm—the digits after the decimal point.
In the common logarithm of 457 (which is approximately 2.66), the mantissa is .66 while the integer part (2) is called the characteristic.
The term also applies in computing to the significant digits of a floating-point number, though "significand" is now preferred in that context.
