enslave

Strip all freedom

To enslave is to make someone a slave—to strip them of freedom and hold them in bondage.

The word applies literally to the historical practice of slavery and figuratively to anything that dominates or controls: enslaved by addiction, enslaved to debt.

The figurative use can seem tone-deaf given slavery's brutal reality.
