elisions

Syllables left out

Elisions are omissions—sounds, syllables, or passages left out.

In speech, elision drops unstressed sounds: "I'm" elides "I am," "don't" elides "do not." In poetry and song, elision compresses syllables to fit meter: "o'er" for "over," "e'en" for "even." More broadly, elisions are any deliberate omissions: The biography's elisions about his war years seemed suspicious.
