syncope

Brief consciousness loss

Syncope is a temporary loss of consciousness caused by insufficient blood flow to the brain—what's commonly called fainting or passing out: The patient experienced syncope after standing up too quickly.

In linguistics and music, syncope refers to the omission of sounds or beats from the middle of a word or phrase, as when "never" becomes "ne'er."
