antonym

Word's polar counterpart

An antonym is a word with a meaning opposite to another.

Antonyms must be the same part of speech.

Most speakers agree informally on what word pairs are antonyms, even though there is usually a category of understanding in which antonyms can be considered the same thing, not opposites.

Thus go and come are antonyms, even though they’re both verbs of motion, and black and white are antonyms, even though they are both colors.
