gapping

Eliding repeated verbs

Gapping is a grammatical construction where repeated words are omitted from parallel clauses: John ordered coffee and Mary tea (omitting "ordered").

The term also applies to spark plug maintenance—adjusting the gap between electrodes to the correct distance.

In casual use, gapping can mean leaving gaps or spacing things out: I've been gapping my doses to make the prescription last.
